Modern Buddhism Course Part One
Class 1. What is Modern Buddhism W/C 1/9/25
Buddhism is the practice of Buddha’s teachings, also called ‘Dharma’, which means ‘protection’.There are two stages to the practice of Buddha’s teachings – the practices of Sutra and Tantra – both of which are explained in the book Modern Buddhism. We will be learning about these practices and how they can benefit us in our modern daily life. This class will be an introduction to what profound wisdom lays ahead.
Class 2. What is the mind W/C 8/9/25
As Venerable Geshe La asks : what is the mind ? We often talk about our mind but if someone were to ask us ‘What is the mind ?’ , we would have no clear answer. In this class we will be exploring the mind from Buddhist Teachings. A fascinating insight that will help us experience more positive states of mind.
Class 3. The Preciousness of our Human Life W/C 15/9/25
The purpose of understanding the preciousness of our human life is to encourage us to take the real meaning of our human life. We will be exploring how we can ensure to make the very most of our life in a wonderfully meaningful way.
Class 4. What Does Our Death Mean? W/C 22/9/25
Our death is perhaps something we don’t like to think about and of course it can be very challenging at different times in our life through our own experiences. Here we will be exploring ways in which we can be extremely kind to our self in preparing for the time of our death and also how we can be of great benefit to others , and the ones we love dearly.
Class 5. 29/9/25 W/C Going for Refuge.
Here we will be exploring what Buddhists mean by Going for Refuge. We will start to understand how this practice can help us in our daily life. How this practice is the source of protection , our peace of mind and happiness.
Class 6 What is Karma? W/C 13/10/25
Karma is one of Buddha’s most profound teachings. By understanding Buddhas teachings on Karma we can achieve so much , it helps us to make sense of the myriad of things that happen in life. Venerable Geshe-La says in Modern Buddhism “Generally, karma means ‘action’. From non-virtuous actions comes suffering and from virtuous actions comes happiness: if we believe this, we believe in karma”. There is so much that we can explore together on the subject of Karma.
Class 7 The Four Noble Truths W/C 20/10/25
In the Sutra of the Four Noble Truths, Buddha says: You should know sufferings. You should abandon origins. You should attain cessations. You should practise the path. We can gain such practical advice from this teaching on how we can navigate the hurdles of everyday life by developing an understanding and appreciation of the Four Noble Truths and merge them into our busy modern lives.

Class 8 Training in The Three Types of Love W/C 3/11/25
There are three types of love that Buddha teaches us to develop more and more in our life. Affectionate Love. Cherishing Love and Wishing Love. There are so many benefits in increasing our love in these ways and it’s a precious mind we can extend and cultivate in ways that lead to happiness , for ourselves, and others.
Class 9 Training in Universal Compassion W/C 10/11/25
Universal compassion is a mind that sincerely wishes to liberate all living beings from suffering permanently. We build on our love for others , see their suffering and develop deep compassion for them. We can grow our compassion towards all and we will see how this mind of compassion can start to change our mind and therefore our experiences in life. We can begin to imagine a world where all living beings have compassion for each other.
Class 10 Training in the Supreme Good Heart Bodhichitta W/C 17/11/25
When we see so much suffering we can often think what can I do ? We can continue to intervene in practical ways to help others and at the same time develop the beautiful mind of Bodhichitta. The gateway through which we enter the Bodhisattva’s path is Bodhichitta. ‘Bodhi’ means enlightenment and ‘Chitta’ means mind. Bodhichitta is a mind that spontaneously wishes to attain enlightenment to benefit each and every living being directly.
Class 11 The Six Perfections W/C 24/11/25
The Six Perfections are said to be the actual path to enlightenment. The six perfections are the practices of Giving, Moral Discipline, Patience, Effort, Concentration and Wisdom, motivated by Bodhichitta. These are wonderful practices we can engage with in our daily life and we will start to experience their results by feeling more positive , peaceful and happier.
Class 12 What is Emptiness? W/C 1/12//25
Emptiness is the way things really are. It is the way things exist as opposed to the way they appear. In this class, we will be exploring teachings on Emptiness, teachings that have been requested by people attending our classes recently. We will explore the real power of our mind to understand the truth of emptiness and how we can begin to let go of our painful experiences by seeing how things really exist.
Class 13 The Practice of Emptiness in our Daily Activities W/C 8/12/25
Deepening our understanding of Emptiness within the context of our daily life experiences can be wonderfully freeing. We can learn to stop grasping at things so strongly , begin to have a lighter approach towards the myriad of demands we have in our life and then develop the flexibility of mind to respond to every situation in a constructive way.
Class 14 The preciousness of Tantra W/C 15/12/25
In his Sutra teachings , which we have largely covered in the preceding classes , Buddha gives us great encouragement to accomplish the ultimate goal of human life. Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso explains “This goal will be accomplished quickly through the practice of Tantra. Tantra, also known as ‘Secret Mantra’ or ‘Vajrayana’, is a special method to purify our world, our self, our enjoyments and our activities; and if we put this method into practice we shall very quickly attain enlightenment”. This class will be an introduction to Tantra.

In this half day course with our wonderful teacher Mark , we will be exploring how its easy for us to become overwhelmed by negative thoughts and stressful feelings and how we can experience mental ill health within the context of our modern busy daily lives. We have these increasing and daunting challenges in our life so much. Within this course we will be exploring methods , in addition to any support we already have in place, that can help us manage these painful feelings and respond to life’s difficulties with a more peaceful and positive mind.
